Super Bowl 2017

tlt-umpireFootball. Love it or hate it, there’s something on Super Bowl Sunday for almost everyone.

We gave up TV in our house several years ago. It was a good year. We read more, played games, completed projects, and grew closer as a family.

We only missed having TV a few times. One of those days was on Super Bowl Sunday. I’m embarrassed to say that we kind of invited ourselves to a party at a friend’s house that Sunday. Honestly, I don’t think the kids paid much attention to the football. However, they had a lot of fun playing other games with their friends—that and eating—lots and lots of eating.

The next year (for good or bad) we had TV back in our house for the game. Our kids had friends over. Even those who didn’t like football would run into the living room whenever a commercial came on. We made sure there were plenty of yummy snacks.

Food does seem to play an important part in the event. I can’t tell you how to host a good party, but I can share a simple recipe.

tlt-wmschiliQuick Chili Recipe
1 or 2 lb. ground beef (85/15 ratio)
1 large onion, chopped
4 cans of beans (your choice of variety)
1 – 28 oz can of Tomato Sauce (or crushed tomatoes)
1 – 16 oz can of Stewed Tomatoes (optional)
¼ – ½ cup Ketchup
1 teaspoon Garlic Salt
1 packet of Williams Chili Seasoning
(Seasons 2 lbs meat, no salt added)
Instructions:
Fry ground beef until done, remove from pan and drain grease.
Sauté chopped onion
(in small amount of remaining grease or in olive oil)
Drain liquid and rinse the beans
(this eliminates the sliminess of canned beans)
Add remaining ingredients
Plus add 1 – 28 oz can full of water

Variations:
For spicier chili, use seasoning packet for 4 lbs meat
Exchange ground beef for ground turkey or sausage
Reduce water or liquid content and serve over hot dogs

Serve with:
Hot Sauce
Jalapenos or Peppers of Choice
Chopped Onion
Shredded Cheese
Corn or Tortilla Chips
Soda Crackers or Oyster Crackers
Extra salt and pepper

Football Humor
An acquaintance recently told me about the extravagant party she planned for Super Bowl Sunday.

“Oh,” I said. “I didn’t think you were a fan.”

“I’m not,” she said. (Her husband is a HUGE fan. Their lives revolve around the games.)

“The party is fun, though,” she continued. “We have all our friends over. Most of the women hang out in the kitchen and talk. We do watch the commercials. Some of the ladies actually like football so they pay attention to the game if a team they like is playing.”

Then she paused and a slow smile spread across her face. “The best part, and the real reason I host the party is to celebrate—football season is finally OVER!”

As I said, there’s something for nearly everyone to enjoy on Super Bowl Sunday.

What’s your favorite memory of the day? Share it or your favorite recipe or commercial in the comments below.

  1. I must admit, I much prefer the Puppy Bowl to the Super Bowl 🙂 but you are right, the food is the main event of the day. My favorite game day snack is Buffalo Chicken Dip 🙂
