Memorial Day, 2017
How do you spend Memorial Day?
The original purpose of Memorial Day was a day set aside to remember our military service members who died while on active duty. It was officially proclaimed following the Civil War due to the large number of war dead.
It has sometimes been called “Decoration Day” because of the practice of placing flowers on the gravesites. The end of May was chosen because so many flowers are in bloom at that time.
Although it was originally established specifically to honor military war dead, it is also a time when we decorate the graves of family and friends.
My prayer for all Americans is that we will make time today to build good memories with our loved ones while we have the opportunity.
Two previous posts are available on this site in memory of our war dead.
One regards the sacrifices made at Normandy:
