Der Dutchman

Comfort Food and More at Der Dutchman’s restaurant.

Last week I mentioned the two Amish restaurants a few blocks apart from each other in Sarasota, Florida. We chose to eat lunch at Yoder’s, which I’ve affectionately given the pet name: Yoder’s Gravy Ladle in honor of their generous fine gravy (see last week’s post).

Immediately after we finished our lunch at Yoder’s, we drove to Der Dutchman. We’d heard their bakery was fabulous. It did not disappoint.

We also knew from their sign that they had a gift shop. It did not disappoint either. In fact, it took up the entire second story of the large restaurant.

Selection leaned toward the more country-cottage style of décor, but it certainly had enough variety of merchandise to satisfy window shoppers and serious buyers alike. Home goods, knick-knacks, musical clocks and some furniture were among the items for sale.

The bakery shop, in the open front area of the building also held a large variety of items. Along with basic bread, there were plenty of sweet treats. We recommend the cinnamon swirl bread, the chocolate-peanut butter pie, and the pecan bars (basically pecan pie cut into rectangles).

Even though we did not eat a meal at Der Dutchman, the dining room was quite large. I don’t think you’d have to wait long to be seated even if you were part of a bus tour.

Speaking of bus tours. This restaurant, bakery, and gift shop had a very polished look—corporate even. When I investigated I found it to be a larger enterprise with hotels as well. See their website below for their Inn.

I think it was worth our time to go to both Yoder’s and Der Dutchman. I’d recommend you do the same. Although you might want to take a walk afterward. Or maybe a nap. Or maybe you’d like to rent one of the adult-sized tricycles the Amish like to ride. Looked fun to me.

Which do you prefer after rich food? Exercise or nap? Tell me about it in the comments below. Or tell me about your favorite restaurant for comfort food. I’m always looking for new recommendations.

Knowing that comfort food is calorie-rich, often heavy food, you’re probably wondering how I can possibly call this an appropriate post on a blog about traveling light. But I am.

Until next time . . . Travel Light,
