Happy Grandparents’ Day

You may have noticed I haven’t been posting much lately. It’s time to catch you up to date. This has been one of my busiest summers ever, even though we have not traveled very much. Why so busy?

Grandkids.

One of my adult children needed a sitter for part of July and August because his boss had extra work to be done. Another of my adult children needed help because the regular babysitter was diagnosed with cancer. The sitter’s treatments began immediately after the diagnosis.

Thus I spent part of July and much of August babysitting two and sometimes, four children: one two-year-old, two three-year-olds, and one six-year-old.

At the end of each day I was exhausted, but happy. I think there was a reason why. When I would think back over the day’s events at least one memory would make me smile. For instance, on one hectic hot day the kids were in and out the back door several times.

Our dog tried to keep up. She begged to go out, she begged to come in. I told my oldest grandson, “Let her out, please.” Then later, “Let her in, please.”

She dragged her tug toy out to their circle. “Children, she wants you to play tug of war with her.”

“I am done.”

Later, they found her ball and threw it repeatedly for her. When she had enough she hid her ball under the sofa. They tried to crawl after her. “Leave her alone, children. When she hides her toys, she’s done playing.”

Exhausted from trying to keep up with all the activity, she climbed into her bed. The children immediately ran to pet her. “Better leave her alone, children. She’s tired and she might nip you.”

Finally, near the end of the afternoon, she sat by the door again beside her water bowl. The six-year-old assumed she wanted out. “Here, doggie, I’ll open the door.”

“No, she doesn’t want out.” I told him. “She wants her empty water bowl filled.”

He turned large eyes on me. “Grandma, do you speak dog?”

While I’ve cared for my grandchildren, I’ve been writing some of the cute things they say and do. Collecting memories to share with their parents and maybe in a small book someday.

Grandparents’ Day is this Sunday, September 8, 2019. How will you celebrate it? What memories will you make?

Tell me your plans in the comments below. Or tell me how you’ve celebrated it in the past. Or better still—share a story about your dear grandchildren that made you smile.

Until next time . . . Travel Light,

  1. OMG I can relate so much! I just retired August 1st and my daughter went on vacation which left us with the grandkids for a week. Today is my first day without them and I’m still exhausted…lol However, it was fun and they didn’t want to go home!
