Happy Pi Day!

No. I did not misspell. It is Pi. As in 3.14, though people do sometimes celebrate the day by making / buying and eating pie.

All sorts of pie. Pizza pie. Fruit pie. Cream pie. Maybe even pasties like savory meat and vegetable pies. (And no, I did not misspell that word either.)

So what is Pi? It is the relationship between the perimeter of a circle, the circumference and the distance across that circle, the diameter. The principle is universal whether you apply it to a wagon wheel, a ferris wheel, or a pizza pie.

If you need more ways to celebrate like a math geek, check out this mathematical website in honor of the day: https://www.piday.org  Their website will even help you calculate your birthday in Pi, if you would like.

Even we non-math geeks can still enjoy the fun. Have your kids play I-spy. Look for circles wherever you travel and in buildings. From where I sit writing this blog post, I-spy several circular objects, my coffee cup for one.

By the way, I know a teenager who never liked to participate in sports, but she loved math. Her friends gave her grief that she was not involved in athletics.

She grew tired of their criticisms. Finally she replied, “I’m not an athlete. I’m a math-lete.”

Until next time . . . Travel Light,
